Should Your Website Use English, Hindi or Punjabi?

Use each language for a real audience and task. Every added version needs accurate translation, navigation, metadata, forms, review and ongoing updates.

Language choice should come from customers and operations—not a stereotype about a city or age group.

Quick answer

Choose English, Hindi, Punjabi or a combination based on the language real customers use for the purchase or enquiry and the business's ability to review and maintain every version. Translate complete user journeys, not only headings. Use separate crawlable URLs and language annotations for full equivalents where appropriate.

Roman-script Hinglish can support conversational guidance but is not a substitute for a reviewed Hindi or Punjabi translation.

Collect evidence from the customer journey

Ask where misunderstanding actually occurs.

Review sales calls, WhatsApp messages, search queries, support questions, customer interviews and staff experience. The language used for technical specifications may differ from the language used for directions, reassurance or family coordination.

Translate the complete task

A language toggle is not a finished multilingual experience.

Include navigation, headings, body copy, forms, validation, confirmation, product data, policies, metadata, structured information and contact instructions. If checkout or a third-party widget cannot support the language, disclose the transition clearly.

Name the reviewer and source version

Machine output still needs a fluent human responsible for meaning.

Choose the source language, translation workflow, terminology list, reviewer and update process. Clinical, legal, financial and product-safety wording needs appropriate subject-matter review as well as language fluency.

Use stable language URLs for full versions

Let users and search engines reach each maintained equivalent.

Use distinct crawlable URLs for complete language versions, self-referencing canonicals and appropriate hreflang links between genuine equivalents. Do not auto-redirect only from assumed language or location; keep a visible switch.

Measure usefulness after launch

Keyword estimates do not prove that a translation helps customers.

Track visits, search queries, task completion, enquiry quality, language-switch use, errors and stale-page checks by version. Remove or improve a version when the business cannot keep it accurate.

Google guidance for localized versions

Technical annotations support, but do not replace, complete useful content.

Questions

Language questions

Does every Punjab business need Punjabi?
No. Add it when real customers need it and the business can review and maintain it accurately.
Can I use automatic translation?
It can assist a draft, but a fluent reviewer should approve meaning, terminology, forms and important regulated or safety-related statements.
Should translated pages share one URL?
For full crawlable versions, separate stable URLs are normally clearer for users, measurement and language annotations.
Is Roman Hinglish a full Hindi translation?
No. It can make conversational instructions approachable for some audiences, but it does not replace a reviewed Devanagari or Gurmukhi version when that is required.
