Shopify vs WordPress for an Indian Business
Shopify is a managed commerce platform. WordPress is a general-purpose publishing system; an online store normally adds WooCommerce or another commerce layer plus chosen hosting.
First decide whether the primary job is content and enquiries, or catalogue, checkout and order operations.
Quick answer
Choose Shopify when online selling, checkout and order administration are the primary job and a managed platform fits the required integrations. Choose WordPress when content, service enquiries and publishing are primary, or when a self-hosted WooCommerce stack provides required control. Compare the same feature list, payment methods, maintenance and three-year costs.
Define the website’s primary job first
Platform advice is unreliable until the workflow is named.
A consultant, clinic or manufacturer collecting enquiries may need WordPress pages, forms and publishing without a store. A retailer managing products, inventory, discounts, shipping and orders may fit Shopify. A content-heavy store can use either Shopify’s content features or WordPress with WooCommerce; test the real editorial and commerce tasks before deciding.
Compare full running cost, not “subscription versus free”
WordPress software being open-source does not make hosting and maintenance free.
Shopify cost can include the plan, theme, apps, third-party-provider fees, payment processing, domain, email and development. WordPress cost can include hosting, domain, theme or custom build, plugins, backups, security, maintenance, payment processing and development. Record current renewal prices and the date; promotional prices are not a long-term budget.
For ecommerce, verify payments and operations before design
Indian payment support is an eligibility and integration question, not a logo checklist.
Document UPI, cards, netbanking, COD, settlements, refunds, subscriptions and international requirements. Then verify each requirement against current Shopify, WooCommerce and payment-provider documentation. Shopify may charge a plan-specific third-party-provider fee in addition to processing fees. A WordPress gateway is a maintained plugin and must be compatible with the store stack.
Decide who carries technical responsibility
Managed does not mean no work; self-hosted does not mean unlimited freedom.
Shopify manages core hosting and platform updates, while the merchant manages apps, users, content, operations and customisations. With WordPress, the owner or maintenance provider also manages hosting, core, theme, plugins, backups, security and compatibility. Put the owner and response window for each task in writing.
Plan ownership and exit before launch
Keep business accounts and exports under business control.
Record ownership of the domain, platform or hosting, payment provider, email, analytics, content, media, theme or custom code and paid licences. A migration from Shopify or WordPress can move selected data, but platform-specific themes, apps, plugins and checkout logic may need replacement. Map important URLs and redirects.
