Wix vs WordPress for an Indian Business
Wix bundles hosting, software updates and visual editing into a managed platform. WordPress gives you open-source software and broader hosting and development choices, with more maintenance responsibility.
Compare a dated three-year cost and a written feature list. Promotional pricing and provider integrations can change.
Quick answer
Choose Wix when a managed all-in-one service and visual editing are more valuable than hosting portability. Choose WordPress when the business needs broader hosting, code, plugin and developer choices and accepts responsibility for updates and security. Compare current plans, required integrations, maintenance and migration cost—not “free” versus “paid”.
The largest difference is the operating model
Wix is a hosted SaaS product; WordPress is software installed on hosting selected by the site owner.
Wix manages the hosting environment and platform updates. Its official documentation says Wix sites rely on Wix services and need to run on Wix infrastructure, while the content created by the customer belongs to the customer. WordPress software can run with many hosting providers, but the site owner or maintenance provider must manage hosting, updates, backups and the chosen extensions.
Editing convenience depends on the site and the person updating it
A visual editor can be easier at first, while a planned content model can be easier at scale.
Wix offers a managed visual-building workflow with fewer infrastructure decisions. WordPress editing varies by theme, block setup and plugins; a well-configured site can be straightforward, while a poorly assembled plugin stack can be difficult. Test the actual editing tasks—changing a service, adding a product or publishing an article—before choosing.
Compare the same scope over several years
WordPress is not cost-free, and a Wix subscription is not the whole business budget.
For Wix, record the required plan, renewal price, apps, email, domain and payment-provider charges. For WordPress, record hosting renewal, premium theme or plugin licences, backups, security, maintenance and developer time. Use current written prices on the date of the decision because promotions and plan contents change.
Verify Indian payment and business requirements before committing
Provider availability, supported methods and eligibility are time-sensitive.
Write down the required Indian and international payment methods, settlement needs, business category, tax and invoice workflow, subscriptions, refunds and shipping integrations. Then verify each requirement against the platform and payment provider’s current official documentation. Do not choose from an old list of gateway logos.
Content ownership and complete site portability are different questions
A migration can preserve information without preserving the original site implementation.
Wix states that its site technology depends on Wix infrastructure, so moving to a different platform involves rebuilding the presentation and platform-specific functionality. Some Wix data or content may have feature-specific export options, but there is no complete one-click export that recreates the Wix site elsewhere.
WordPress includes a content-export tool, and a host-to-host move can also transfer files and the database when the owner has access. WordPress exports do not automatically solve every theme, plugin, licence or server dependency, so even WordPress migration needs a checklist.
Do not choose only from an SEO slogan
Both platforms can publish crawlable pages; implementation and content quality still matter.
Check title and description control, canonical behavior, redirects, sitemap handling, structured data needs, image performance, internal linking and the ability to create the required page structure. A WordPress installation is not automatically optimised, and a Wix site is not automatically invisible to search engines.
